Hello, I'm a totally newbie to UBB. All I know about its functionality is from the cp.

I have heard about hacks and that stuff, so maybe for my problem is a solution:

UBB has 3 hierarchies: categories, boards and themes. But for my board I even need more than 3 of them. Best would be an arbitrary number smile

Thanx in advance and regards
Jochen

I'm sorry, I guess I don't understand what you're trying to get. If possible, can you please provide an example so we can see what you're talking about? Cuz I'm just not getting it...

Hi Skorpion,

thanx for asking me.

UBB has three hierarchies:
1. Categories
2. Boards
3. Topics
(Ok, you can say that there is also a fourth one: one topic with all replies. But here in my consideration it doesn't count)

So maybe I can make this clear with an example:
Look at the German Board in UBB Developers Network. Once selected you are directly in the Boards-Hierarchy. But it would be better if it has been splitted up in several categories. E.g. "Design Integration", "Templates", "Mod Questions", etc. (of course the german words for this smile )

This means: you have at the top level categories, from here you can select your needed board, and in your board you also may select from several categories.

I'm not good in explaining (especially in english). So let me express my needs in an example where I pinpoint the hierarchies:

Categories Boards (Categories) Topics
------------------------------------------------------------------
Announcements Announcement - Team UBBDev
Join Team
...
Modifications Mod Ideas - User selects
Moderator Log
vBulletin
...
Intern. Supp. German Forum (Design Integration) Einbau von Graemlins
Header-Footer Problem
...
(Templates) ...
(Mod Questions) Newsfader Beta
...
...
...
...

(Categories) would be the new hierarchy. The belonging entries are listet also in brackets.

I appreciate your help. Thanx a lot.

Ups. My example doesn't look structured very well. Another try:

I believe UBB is simply not made to do that. Making it do what you're wanting would probably require quite a bit of alteration, something far more complicated than templates. I'll move this question into our Mod Suggestions (v6.1) forum and someone there might be able to help.

something like that (subcategories) was done for v5 (was a huge modification, with something like 4 pages of instructions) and it really is standard in 6+, right now we have:

forum summary ==>> categories ==>> forums ==>> topics

are you asking for another level? I am sure it can be done, but would be an extreme amount of work and would effectively lock you into that version, since you couldn't upgrade without doing it all over again...

Hi Allen,
thanx for your reply. You wrote

I don't know anything about version 5, I'm using 6.05.
What do you mean with "forum summary"? - Showing the categories without the forums (my wording for forums was "boards", but as I have learned "forum" is the one more often used)?

Let me sum up the hierarchies:
1. Forum Categories
2. List of all Forums
3. List of all Topics
(4. Topic and all replies) (Not counted for me as a hierarchy.)

Yes Allen, I think that's what I'm searching for. I agree with you regarding efforts and drawbacks.

But maybe I have overseen something and the "forum summery" is something different to 1.?

Jochen
